Once upon a time in a coastal town far, far away, an abalone was spawned over a rocky ridge beneath the waves. Floating down amongst seven million of his brothers and sisters (and some in between) he had the feeling that somehow his life was going to be special. As he developed into a larvae lodged up against the side of an old long forgotten ship's anchor and gradually watched about five million of the other abalone in his family float away and be devoured by various forms of ocean fauna, He could feel the changes coming as a thick and ruddy shell began to form on his back.
At two and a half years of age, he had gotten to know his slab of rock and the familiar form of the rusty old anchor pretty well, and was getting along splendidly with his few scattered abalone siblings in the area who had managed to avoid becoming a starfish's breakfast and were also fairly safely on their way to abalone adulthood and a long life of suctioning themselves to the local rock and grappling strands of kelp whenever possible. Our hero, the one abalone who might save them all, finally decided one day that it was time for him to venture forth and seek his fortune, so that he might return to the old rusty anchor one day, and lead his fellow mollusks to a brighter day.
